Which type of distracted driving caused your accident?

In the moments it takes for an accident to happen, a motor vehicle crash could change your life irrevocably. A collision has the potential to leave you with serious injuries, damage to your personal property and much more. In many cases, serious motor vehicle accidents take place due to the negligent and reckless actions of another person, such as driving while distracted.

Distracted driving is one of the most common and pressing safety concerns on Georgia roads. Even just one moment of distraction can have irrevocable consequences, possibly causing an accident that leaves innocent motorists with serious or fatal injuries. There are different types of distraction, and while they each affect drivers in different ways, they are avoidable and inexcusable.

 Common ways drivers experience distraction

Distracted driving includes anything that takes a driver's attention away from driving for even a few seconds. You may associate this behavior with cellphone use, and while that is common, it is not the only reason a driver could be focusing on something other than the task at hand. Some of the most common types of distraction one may experience include:

  • Manual distraction is anything that causes a driver to remove his or her hands from the wheel. This can include holding a phone, adjusting the radio or reaching for something.
  • Cognitive distraction includes anything that causes a driver's mind to wander, such as daydreaming, talking on the phone or listening to the radio.
  • Visual distraction is anything that causes a driver to take his or her eyes off the road. This may include looking at a billboard, reading a text message or even glancing at a passenger.

A driver can have both hands on the wheel and still experience distraction. Cellphones are particularly dangerous because their use can cause multiple types of distraction at the same time.

Who is to blame?

After a serious car accident, you may wonder who is to blame for what happened to you. A distracted driver may be the reason for your pain and suffering, but you do not have to suffer alone. It is possible you have grounds to pursue financial compensation through a civil claim, a step that will allow you to recoup losses and pursue appropriate damages. It may be helpful for you to seek an assessment and explanation of your legal options after an accident.
