What you do after your car accident matters

One minute you are driving down the road, and the next you are sitting on the side of the road with injuries and damage to your personal property. An accident can happen in an instant, and you could find yourself left with damages and losses that can affect your life long-term. It is in your interests to know how to pick up the pieces and move forward after this type of devastating event.

A car accident is a traumatic event, and it's smart to be prepared in case the described scenario happens to you. Wasted time could mean lost money if you have grounds to pursue a civil claim or are trying to make a claim with the insurance company. Knowing how to take the next steps can save you time and may result in a better chance of success with whatever process you choose to pursue.

What's next?

At the scene of the accident, you may need to move your vehicle to the side of the road to make room for traffic flow and emergency vehicles. After checking on others, you can call for help and wait for police. It may be useful for you to gather as much information as possible, including asking for information from witnesses, exchanging information with other drivers involved and taking pictures of the accident scene.

After you are able to leave the scene, you will then need to decide if you need to file a claim with the insurance company. Keep in mind that these companies do not have your best interests in mind, and they will work to protect their bottom line above all else. You may have to fight for the full amount you deserve from the insurance company. At this point, you may determine it is beneficial to move forward with a civil claim.

Don't fight for recovery alone

You have the right to pursue a full and fair recovery after an accident in Georgia. Because of the complexity of the civil justice system, you may find it beneficial to discuss your options with an experienced personal injury attorney first. This guidance can prove invaluable as you put together a claim and navigate matters involving the insurance company. If you are unsure of what to do next after a crash, it may help to seek an assessment of your case and explanation of your options.
